Gene Wilder wrote most of Young Frankenstein‘s screenplay

As you probably know, Gene Wilder died yesterday at the age of 83 from complications related to Alzheimer’s disease. A number of good obituaries were published today, but some of them understate his contribution to Young Frankenstein. The screenplay is credited to both Wilder and Mel Brooks, and while Brooks deserves a lot of credit, if you read Wilder’s draft (PDF) you’ll discover that the final screenplay and the basic story were mostly Wilder’s work.
