I’m not etymologist, but I believe these are hornets, which are large “eusocial” wasps, meaning they live in cooperative colonies like ants and honeybees. The term is derived from the prefix “eu-” of Greek origin and meaning “good,” “well,” or “true” plus the English word “social,” and interestingly enough was apparently not coined until the mid-1960s. I put in that word derivation so I could have etymology and entomology in the same post.
